Important: This schedule is frequently updated so be sure to log in often for the latest additions and changes!
Paper #1 (1/8 – 2/2): Identity
1/8 – First Day of Instruction. Read the welcome message and take the Welcome Quiz. (To access the quizzes, log in to Laulima and click on “Tests & Quizzes.”) This is the most important first step for this class. It gives you an overview of the course by addressing questions that are frequently asked. Next, log in to our Laulima discussion forum and your hawaii.edu mailbox. Get my Twitter feeds via @jimkcc or view them toward the top of the right sidebar on this page. Become familiar with these instructional media. Carefully review the information in our class blog, especially the schedule and syllabus (click on the tab at the top of the page). In the schedule, make it a point to read the FD5/Final Exam instructions. In the syllabus, pay special attention to the grading policy and the SŌL (Success for Online Learners) orientation. (Submit the SŌL module completion certificate for a 10-point bonus on your FD1.) These will give you an understanding of online classes in general and this class in particular.
1/9 – Intro to Paper #1. Read the Guidelines for Paper #1 by midnight. Midnight — 11:55 PM to be exact — is the official time for all due dates. For the due date for the first draft of this paper, see the schedule below for “Submit Review Draft #1 (RD1).”

1/11 – Complete the Welcome Quiz [5 pts], which is based on the Welcome Message. In Laulima, click on “Tests & Quizzes” in the left sidebar.
For our first paper, a number of short quizzes have been scheduled. Their purpose is to highlight information from assigned readings that will help you throughout this course. The quizzes are simple, and you can take them as often as you want (before the deadline) for the best possible scores. (See scores for discussions and quizzes – http://tinyurl.com/jbusvma/#dq .) In the remaining papers 2-5, the number of quizzes are kept to a minimum of one or two. If you score less than 10 on any of the quizzes, click on “feedback” (on the scoring summary page). You’ll see a list of the questions and your answers and, on the far right of each item, a score indicator. Correct is 1/1. Incorrect is 0/1.

(If you include your blog URL and WordPress password, I’ll be able to log in and make adjustments for you.) I’ll have my iPhone or iPad with me when I’m away from my desktop, so I’ll be able to respond to your email within an hour or two — if not sooner. If you’ve completed the setup, please consider helping classmates.
